The Skeleton Bridge School was built in 1858, just after the Civil War, to serve the Town of Vinland which had been incorporated in 1849. The town is in Winnebago County. The School is located on the corner of Brooks and Skeleton Bridge Roads. The school was in use until 1957 when it was closed and the students were sent to the Oshkosh Area School District.
In 1858 land was obtained for a school which took the name of the nearby bridge over Daggetts Creek. The crossing was called Skeleton Bridge. The origin of the name remains uncertain. The road leads to Butte des Morts or "Mound of Death". There was a battle between the Fox and Menominee Indian tribes and there skeletons were found exposed. --Thanks Oshkosh Public Library reference librarians for the info.
