King Frederick V was born on March 31, 1723. he became king of Denmark and Norway in 1746. During is 20 year reign he founded the Royal Danish Academy of Art and purchased the Danish West Indies from the Danish West India Company. King Frederick V died on January 14, 1766 at the age of 42.
On 1 August 1771, an equestrian statue of Frederick V dressed as a Roman emperor was finally unveiled at Amalienborg Plaza in Copenhagen. The statue was commissioned by his minister A.G. Moltke in 1753 and created by the French sculptor Jacques François Joseph Saly.
The stamp was issued by Denmark in 1955 as part of a 10 stamp set celebrating the 1000th anniversary of the Kingdom of Denmark, each stamp representing a different century. This stamp represented the 18th century.
