The tentacles seem to wrap around the blue, glass container which stands on a metal platform. Inside the container artwork represents jellyfish. Around the perimeter of the metal stand is a compass rose with scientific diagrams showing the workings of a heart, bird, octopus and fish. A blue whale is depicted which was washed up nearby in 1897 and the modern reef is shown as Europe's first artificial surf reef. The word 'Pier' is defined as "Pier - noun - a structure built on posts extending from land, out over water. Origin - C.1150 AD. Earlier - perh, per, pera. Believed from Latin 'podium.' " A tap represents Boscombe Spring and a dinosaur and ammonite show the Jurassic Coast. Boscombe Gardens is indicated with a directional arrow and a dragonfly and tree.
