Prior to 1950, the open area now known as "The Quad" was the site of Sweetland Field, home of the Willamette University Bearcats football team. The grandstand mentioned in the guide (visible near the top of the photo above) was demolished following the opening of McCullouch Stadium in 1950, roughly 1/2 mile to the south.
The Quad still serves a recreational purpose - at the time of the Waymark photos, there were faint white lines painted onto the grass. The previous day, the site hosted a rugby match against a team from Central Oregon.
