B.O.C.K. - Annapolis, MD - Figurative Public Sculpture on Waymarking.com

When visiting Annapolis, MD in October 2012, I noticed at least two new pieces of public art that had a common basic look to them. Apparently the City of Annapolis' Art in Public Places Commission (AIPPC) initiated this "Hatching the Arts in Annapolis" project and local businesses have donated money to suppliment the city funding for the cost of the art. Artists submitted applications to the AIPPC who then picked the "winners" from the submissions. The basic form for all the art works is a basic fiberglass form with an oblong shape, similar to a loppsided egg shell.

This featured public art display, titled "B.O.C.K," is the second of a scheduled dozen public art works. B.O.C.K stands for Biomechanical Ovulometrical Chicken from Kalamazoo, according to the artist. This version of the "chicken and egg" theme is that of a robotic rooster Naval aviator. The copper colored rooster has bolted plates for the body, aged copper beak, a leather helmet and old-style aviator goggles. His rooster tail is made of odd pieces of weathered driftwood. These articles and the materials all fit nicely with Annapolis history as a sea port and as the home of the Naval Academy.

The artist is Walker Babington. Babington has had his art placed in San Francisco and here in Annapolis. He is now based in the Annapolis area. He is the man standing next to his creation, B.O.C.K., in the default photo to this waymark. I happened upon him putting the finishing touches on the "secret compartment" that allows a viewer to see inside the rooster to watch his inner workings move. The small box on his breast can be opened up for a lighted view inside.

The art is located at the Loews Annapolis Hotel in downtown Annapolis, MD. The address for the hotel, and thus B.O.C.K., is 126 West Street, Annapolis, MD.
