In 1881, William Jackson Palmer of the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad built this spur from South Fork to Wagon Wheel Gap. The station served as the terminus for the line until it was extended to Creede during the Silver Boom of 1891. However, with the fall of the silver industry in 1893 and the increase in highway travel, the railroad soon declined. The station was listed on the
National Register of Historic Places on September 27, 1976.
Although this station is now privately owned and can only be viewed from the highway, you can still ride along the historic Denver & Rio Grande route from South Fork to Wagon Wheel Gap [visit link]. The depot sits as a little reminder of the golden age of rail travel that served the booming mining towns. One can only imagine what it was like to travel through the valley during its heyday.
