The wreck of the America is well-marked with a buoy, and is a popular sight on the boat trip from Granda Marais MN to Isle Royale's Windigo Point.

Located in North Gap of Washington Harbor, the bow of the America is marked with a buoy during the diving season. The mooring line floats on the surface running from the bow of the wreck to the blue and white mooring buoy and mooring block off the side of the wreck. It is best to moor parallel to the line to keep your boat from drifting into the channel and blocking normal boat traffic through North Gap. Be aware, the America is closed for diving from noon to 2:00 PM EDT (Note Eastern Daylight Time since the park is on eastern time). This allows the Wenonah and Voyager passengers and other park visitors a chance to see the wreck from the surface.
Features: The ship is 180 feet long and the hull is totally intact. The forward part of the superstructure has been removed by ice and waves. The below deck cabins, amidships and stern are intact. Intact cabins include the crew quarters, boiler room, engine room, galley, dining room, social salon, open afterdeck and several passenger cabins. Since it is relatively sheltered, it can often be dived when the lake is too rough to dive other sites. Its shallow depth and relative intactness makes it the most popular dive site at the island. Because of heavy dive pressure in the past, the America had suffered a fair amount of damage. The Great Lakes Shipwreck Preservation Society has made a significant effort to stabilize areas of the wreck and repair much of the damage.
