The Parish Church of St.James the Less in Pangbourne is Grade II* listed but not much remains of the original. The foundations go back to ancient times but the tower is dated 1718 and the rest of the church is in a Decorated Gothic style by architect J.Woodman and built 1866. It is of conventional design with a west tower, a nave, and a chancel in line, with a south porch, and a north aisle in line with a vestry which is to the north of the chancel. Built of flint with stone dressings and tiled roofs which are separate over the nave/chancel and north aisle/vestry.

The interior is very rich with much carving and moulding, tablets, tombs and a C17th octagonal wooden pulpit with blank arches. Also to be found is a C19th octagonal stone font. Each face carries a different shield within a geometric design including a cross, a dove of peace, a Star of David, a sun, and two 'IHS', one plain the other interwoven. There is a top edge moulding of oak leaves and acorns topped with castellation. Below the panels is a course of foliage above a coved edge. This is mounted on a square plinth with fleched carving and four black marble columns on circular bases. Above these is a coving with various foliage and floral motifs. The whole is on the stone floor of the church with, unusually, no step. It is to be found, again unusually, in line with the columns between nave and north aisle. The area around has been cleared of fixed seating but the space can be occupied by occasional seats.

The font cover is timber with brass and iron fittings, painted blue and gold.

The coordinates are for the main entrance door in the south porch.
