Tomb, Sir John Davis, Kt. Church of St.James the Less, Pangbourne, West Berkshire. - Stone Church Artefacts on Waymarking.com

Pevsner describes this tomb as 'large of grey stone, three recumbent effigies, coupled Tuscan columns left and right'. It commemorates Sir John Davis and his two wives, the first, in about 1593, a widow whose married name was Rowse, the widow of Sir Henry Rowse of Devon, and Elizabeth White, his second wife whom he married in 1609.

The inscription above the tomb reads:-

                                  under
                         part of this Monum lieth
                     y Bodie of Sir John Davis Kt who
                       received y hon of Knighthood
                        & Baronett at y taking of
                        Cades in Spain in y reign
                        of Q Eliz. He died May y
                         14 1625 in y 63 yeare
                               of his Age

'..y taking of Cades in Spain..' occurred on 30th June, 1596, during the Anglo-Spanish War, with the British landing forces under the command of Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex.
