This marker is placed at the Cabin Creek rest area, located at milepost 142 on southbound Interstate Highway 5. The site is approximately 4 1/2 miles northwest of the town of Oakland. The marker is on the west side of the parking area, just north of the restrooms. It is in a "kiosk" next to a map of state rest areas, a highway map, and the always helpful copy of Oregon Statutes that govern the use of highway rest areas and describe the penalties for non-compliance.
Marker Text:

Historic Oakland was started in 1851
and was the principal trading center
for the area and the main stopping
point for the stage line. It is now
listed on the National Register of
Historic Places and is an interesting
stopping point for travelers.
