Your goal is to find and visit a statue of a war hero, of any war, and render your sharpest salute to it. The veteran immortalized in the statue must have served honorably. Take a photo of you saluting and post it here.
IMPORTANT: The statue must be honoring or memorializing a specific veteran. It cannot be a general depiction honoring veterans of a particular war. For example: Saluting one of Viquesney's "Spirit of the American Doughboy" statues will not accomplish this goal.
The waymark coordinates will take you to the statue of Audie Murphy outside of the American Cotton Museum in Greenville TX, BUT this photo goal can be accomplished by saluting ANY statue of a specific war veteran, as long as that person served honorably in wartime.
We chose Audie Murphy for our accomplishment of the goal because he is a local Greenville TX boy who later gained fame as one of the greatest war heroes of all time.
Audie Murphy was a sharecropper's son from Greenville, TX who enlisted in the Army as a private E-1 in 1942. He served as an enlisted man in the US Army's 3rd Infantry Brigade until receiving a battlefield commission to Second Lieutenant in 1944. At the end of WWII Audie Murphy held the rank of First Lieutenant -- 11 paygrades above where he started as a private in 1942.
1Lt Audie Murphy was wounded in combat three times and fought in 9 major campaigns in Europe in the 3 years he was overseas with the 3rd Infantry. By the time the war ended, he had earned every medal for bravery authorized by the United States.
The military etiquette on rendering salutes is pretty clear: juniors salute seniors, and seniors return salutes to juniors. The only time this gets turned on its head is when a Medal of Honor recipient is in the room. Then it is appropriate for any military member, regardless of rank, to salute the MOH recipient, regardless of the MOH recipient's rank.
From sharecropper's son to war hero to movie star to champion of veteran's causes, Audie Murphy is a unique larger-than-life Texan, who remained humble and connected to his Greenville roots until the end of his life.
