Christ Church, Bong Bong was the first permanent church in the Southern Highlands area.

It was built by Charles Throsby in 1845 and consecrated by the first Anglican Bishop of Australia. Charles Throsby was an early explorer who settled nearby & owned a substantial estate. Bong Bong was the first settlement in the southern highlands but nothing apart from the church remains above ground.
The church is still open with services each Sunday at 9 a.m. It is not open to the public at other times. The church is surrounded by a cemetery with graves dating from the 1850's to the present day.
I obtained the above information from the Southern Highlands of NSW website: (
