The Virginia Governor’s Mansion was first occupied by Virginia’s Governor in 1813 and is the oldest executive mansion in the United States. The home was designed by Alexander Parris and is located on Capitol Square in downtown Richmond. James Barbour was the first governor to live in the mansion. The mansion was home to three future United States presidents - James Monroe as governor, and John Tyler, Jr. and William Henry Harrison while their father’s were governors. Over the year there have been 2-major interior renovations to the mansion. The first renovation was during the administration of Governor Claude Swanson and the later during the administration of Governor James Gilmore. Today the mansion is still the home of Virginia’s Chief Executive and while it is maintained as the Governor’s private residence, it is open for tours a various times during the year. For tour information contact the capitol visitor’s center.
