This structure is affectionately known as the "dodo" by locals due to is unusual shape which is a dodecahedron, consisting of 12 identically shaped pentagons. The name also reflected residents' opinion at the time of how taxpayers' money was being wasted on a less than optimal structure.
It was built in 1970 to commemorate "Water Year", and for 40 years remained a bland looking concrete structure. In 2010, it got a make-over resembling a soccer ball to commemorate Nelspruit's status as a FIFA 2010 Soccer World Cup host city.
