This bridge is obviously quite old, as locals I've talked to can't remember when it was not there. Constructed entirely of wood, except for vertical tension rods, this is a very substantial looking bridge.
Another 6 km. down Airport Road was, at one time, a twin to this bridge. Three or four decades ago it burned down and was replaced with a Bailey Bridge. (Yet another reason why new wood bridges have become uncommon.) As was its twin, this is a single lane bridge, which poses a minimum of traffic problems, as it is on a road which handles predominately local traffic.
Perhaps as a testament to the engineering brilliance of the Bailey Bridge, this bridge is allowed a maximum load of 16,000 kg. while the Bailey Bridge, of roughly the same span, can carry 57,000 kg.
Safe parking can be found at a pull out to a side road about 200 metres north west.
