This thirty foot, 9m, carved wooden angel has been created by Shane Green and has been carved from the remains of a 200 year old beech tree which was badly damaged by a 2011 storm. Shane is a local artist, based in Otley.
This ancient and picturesque churchyard has recently won an interim Gold Award from Leeds In Bloom and is the perfect setting for the angel.
Scaffolding was needed around the tree in order that Shane could carve the 'Angel', it was completed in June 2012.
Shane also carved the Olympic Trail, "...17 sculptures were all carved in a day each with chainsaws. The wood had been sited in ten different London Parks before my arrival and each carving is now permanently sited there for a lasting legacy to the Olympic Games that took place in our capital." from:- yorkshirecarver where other works by Shane can be seen.
