English introdyction to Herman Boerhaave;
Herman Boerhaave, 31 December 1668 – 23 September 1738, was a Dutch botanist, humanist and physician of European fame. He is regarded as the founder of clinical teaching and of the modern academic hospital. His main achievement was to demonstrate the relation of symptoms to lesions. In addition, he was the first to isolate the chemical urea from urine. His motto was Simplex sigillum veri; Simplicity is the sign of truth.

About the homestead (Dutch)
Boerhaave heeft de de laatste jaren van zijn leven gewoond hier gewoond. De aanleiding van de koop van het huis was dat hij in de herfst van 1727 een hoge koorts kreeg. Deze koorts was zo hoog dat men vreesde voor zijn leven. De koorts had hem zo verzwakt dat hij een tijdje geen colleges kon geven. Vanaf deze tijd begon Boerhaave het wat rustiger aan te doen. Vanaf deze tijd gaf de hoogleraar nog wel privé-colleges aan studenten bij hem thuis. In dit huis overleed Boerhaave op 69-jarige leeftijd. Na zijn dood erfde Boerhaave's enige dochter Johanna Maria Rapenburg 31.
