Henri Bourassa
Henri Bourassa
A noted orator and passionately committed writer, Henri Bourassa for many years represented Labelle in the House of Commons (1896-1907, 1925-1935) and Saint-Hyacinthe in the Legislative Assembly of Quebec (1908-1912). Fiercely independent, he broke with the Liberal Party and its leader, Wilfrid Laurier, at the time of the Boer War. In 1910 he founded the daily, Le Devoir, of which he was editor-in-chief until 1932. Throughout his whole career he championed a nationalism based on the autonomy and cultural duality of Canada.
