Painting and Scene
The painting shows the church and the old Grammar School as two recognisable buildings still standing today. The modern white toilet block obscures the current view. The horse and birds are possibly fanciful additions by the unknown artist. Other village buildings have changed or been knocked down.
A famous scholar of the school was William Wordsworth, who like all school boys carved his initials in the lid of his wooden desk. Whilst attending the school with his brother, they stayed at Anne Tyson's Cottage.
Viewing
This painting is on view in Hawkshead Grammar School which has a small entrance fee. The Grammar School is still in the hands of the original family who set it up. Once inside, the painting was hung to the left of the fireplace on the ground floor.
