Painting
and Scene
Flag Street is very
photogenic so it is only right that Flag Street should have
been painted by many artists. This is just one painting which is easily
accessible. In the old painting the narrow street is paved with flag
stones, covering a beck (stream). Some of the stones have been lifted.
These would reveal steps down to the stream for washing and industry.
The central hand rail has now gone.
When Flag Street was first sealed and the flag stones
removed, the stream flooded and ripped up the thoroughfare. The stream
still flows under Flag Street but now a metal screen catches debris
before going underground.
Flag Cottage is still slate clad.

Viewing
This painting is on view in the nearby Hawkshead
Market Hall, less than 100 metres away. Free entry. There are
two main public rooms in the Market Hall. The painting could be in
either. The lower room is often open and used by visiting traders. The
upper room is used by local groups who need a big space. A wide
staircase connects them. If the Market Hall is shut when you visit,
call a key holder on 015394 36452.
Date of Painting
The painting is undated so best guess would be by judging the content.
