This stamp, picturing conservationist John Muir against a backdrop of scenery from Yosemite National Park, was part of the "Celebrate the Century" series of postage stamps representing the years 1901 through 1910. John Muir spent a great deal of time in this area and was instrumental in getting the Yosemite Valley set aside as federally controlled land in 1906. This came about after Muir gave President Theodore Roosevelt a personal tour of Yosemite in 1903 including three nights camping in the wilderness.
The cropped photo of Muir is set against an unusual vista of Half Dome with El Capitan in the foreground. It can be seen (but only at great distance) from a scenic overlook on Big Oak Flat Road before it descends into Yosemite Valley.
