This house was the home to Jacob Rickenbaugh, built in 1874. Rickenbaugh was an early settler in this area and helped develop 320 acres of land that he bought. Rickenbaugh was a tanner of hides and used the native trees in his work.
The home that he built here is different than most homes at this time as he built the exterior walls to double as the interior walls as well, using 3 foot thick stones to makes the walls of the home instead of 2 separate walls for the interior and exterior.
The home was also the local post office, serving mail from 1880 until 1951. Women of the Rickenbaugh family took the position of post master. Church services were also held here.
In 1968, the home was sold to the forestry service. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984 and has since been restored by the USFS as an attraction to Lake Celina and the Hoosier National Forest.
