Long Description:
These are people who obviously know how to garden. Though they're not deep, they have garden boxes, and the compost bins have fully enclosed sides, not half exposed for air circulation. In a semi-desert environment such as this water retention is much more important than air circulation. Garden boxes, besides being a more efficient use of available area, can make gardening a bit easier on the back if built higher than a few inches.
There are a total of 56 garden boxes, with gardeners being allotted one or more boxes each spring. Having been a member of a different community garden in the area years ago, I can tell you that community gardens are a wonderful inclusion in new parks. They really are a good idea, as they attract people to the park on a regular basis, and provide a safe place for the kids to play while Mom & Dad do the weeding.
This garden looks to be well thought out, well built, and is still well maintained. But it's new - time will tell how it fares as the years go by.
Plots may be reserved by calling 778-797-2265.
