The rock with the fossils is part of a self guided tour on the campus of USGS. This rock is located by the library.
The plaque reads: “Fossil-bearing marine sandstone of Paleocene age collected three miles north of Fairfield, California. The elongate spiral gastropods (Turritella) lived in shallow water some 60 million years ago and were killed and crowded together possibly by storm currents. The sediment and shells then slumped into deeper water before being lithified into solid rock.”
