This statue is a mosaic piece created by the students of Chapman School along with a resident artist, in 1996. The artist was Lynn Takata.
The statue shows children reading a storybook, while a stuffed dragon peers around the side of the girl, apparently viewing the book that is being read.
The dragon looks a bit like some renditions of Puff the Magic Dragon, but could be a relative instead of the actual Puff, who became famous in 1959 when a book about the magical dragon was created by Leonard Lipton.
As most already know, dragons have the ability to contain large amounts of magic, which is often used to entertain children and to expand their imagination. Some dragons are able to convince children that they have ridden on the back of the dragon, and accomplish various heroic acts with he help of the dragon (such as saving damsels in distress, chasing bad guys out of the kingdom, locating lost babies that have wandered off and are in danger of being eaten alive by wolves, etc).
