This could be one of the easiestly overlooked famous sculptures in San Antonio, TX. It is located at The Exchange Courtyard, 4901 Broadway, San Antonio, TX, hidden behind a few restaurants and other businesses located at this small strip mall. There are nice, upscale places to shop or eat at this location, but the surprise is that you have to walk past the facades of business store fronts to get to the secluded patio/courtyard behind the front parking lot and 2-story commercial buildings. Once in the courtyard, there are babbling water courses, shady trees, a bench or two and a sculpture produced by Richard Harrell Rogers that is listed in the Smithonian Institution Research Inventory! This scupture is 20 feet tall and 5.5 feet wide, made of large Cor-Ten steel sheets welded and cut to made an abstract form and set into a concrete slab. Depending on the approach angle to view the art, you may see a solid form or an opened shape with wavy sides. Thus: abstract. Cor-Ten steel is designed to form a heavy rusty crust on the surface of the steel, This rusty look is on purpose, and some artists and art critics like this look.
There are several pieces of sculpture in the San Antonio area created by the late Richard Harrell Rogers. Born in 1941, he was a quadriplegic artist who designed and created large metal sculptures as well as designing improvements to wheelchairs for which he was granted 5 patents. Many of his works are on permanent display at the McNay Museum in San Antonio, but there are also several large public art displays dotted around San Antonio that are easily accessible to view at any time.
