The 100 block of Convent street is two blocks west of the Bank of America Plaza skyscraper in downtown San Antonio, TX. Another block east of the BOA Plaza is the cultural center of downtown, the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts and a war memorial plaza. Lots to see and do within these few blocks! The first thing to do is park either along the street meters on Convent Street or in one of several parking garages surrounding this entrance onto the downtown San Antonio Riverwalk. This small green space has its own attractions. This abstract art, a mural, a water fountain, and landscaping along the winding sidewalk that leads onto the Riverwalk itself.
This public abstract art is made from flat steel plates welded together into triangular shaped forms that could be interpreted as a bird, or as a beak, or more abstractly, a flock of birds flying overhead. These triangular forms are held out from a central pole by curved extensions. Think windmill or windvain. It appears that these "birds" are arranged to catch the wind and spin around the pole holing them up. However, I fear that due to the location near such tall buildings, this will seldom actually happen .... but it could based on how it is designed. The entire composition is pained a high glossy bright red color. The center pole is bolted into a small concrete base. A square block of concrete is beside the pole's base with a stainless steel title plate attached to it. The inscription on the title plate reads:
"REDBIRD
By Mike Lance 1986
Donated by
J.& M. Babbitt
2008"
