In September 1862 after a skirmish with hostile indians near the James River, it was determined to build a stockade immediately. The North wall of the stockade was built of sod with a ditch in front of it already finished. The east wall was built of posts with boards on either side with earth packed between the boards. The stockade was completed overnight and was 450 feet long.
