The men who engineered Canada's Confederation formed an unlikely alliance. Like the colonies they represented, they were divided by religious, political, and regional animosities.
John A. Macdonald, from Upper-Canada, led the Conservatives, and together he and George-Etienne Cartier, from Lower-Canada and leader of the Liberal Party, became co-prime ministers of the Province of Canada. The two of them believed that forming a new, bigger country was the answer to the province's problems. Cartier was responsible for convincing most French Canadians that Confederation would be good for French Canada, as it would make Quebec a separate province.
From this Coalition, other political figures entered, making place for Confederation .
