It only took 90 to 100 trips to the hardware store for us to notice that Home Hardware flies their corporate flag above the entrance.

We're renovating at present, so an almost daily trip to the hardware store is the norm for us. We're definitely going to have to learn to look up more. Above the entrance to the store are two Home Hardware flags flanked by two Canadian Maple Leafs.

The hardware store is at 8130 Old Waneta Road in East Trail, across the highway from the Waneta Mall. It is one of over 1,000 independent small businesses, each one owner operated. Home Hardware celebrated their 40th year of serving communities across the country in 2004, which would mean that their golden anniversary will take place next year.

Home Hardware began as a dealer owned cooperative in Ontario in 1964, originally with 122 independently owned stores. It has since grown across Canada, with stores in cities, towns and villages in every province and territory. It has four large distribution centres with 400 tractor trailers constantly hauling merchandise out to the stores.

The Home Hardware name and logo - recognized by 80 percent of Canadians - became official on November 9, 1967, during Canada's centennial year.
