Alfred Augustus Glendening was originally a railway clerk before turning to being a landscape artist. He specialised in country scenes with a nostalgic emphasis that appealed to the wealthy middle class of the time. He painted many scenes in the home counties, and later ventured into Norfolk, Yorkshire, Scotland and Wales. His paintings were exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1865 to 1903.

The painting In The Meadow, Youngsbury was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1900 and was bequeathed to the Southampton City Gallery in 1911 by Robert Chipperfield.

At the time Glendening painted the scene Youngsbury would have been well cultivated park land belonging to the Youngsbury house nearby. Today the surrounding land is decidedly neglected and overgrown. There are only two bridges over the River Rib at Youngsbury, a few hundred metres apart. At the second bridge the curvature of the river is wrong, at the presented bridge the river curves in the correct direction. Further, at the located bridge there is some white water under the bridge, albeit reduced compared to the painting, at the other bridge the river is flat.
