Irish born monk and missionary who was martyred in the 7th century. Journeyed to Würzbug in 686 to convert the pagan Duke Gozbert who lived in the Würzburg castle. Succeeded in converting the Duke and many of his subjects in the area of East Franconia and Thuringia to Christianity.
The duke had married his brother's widow, Geilana, who had not converted to Christianity. Kilian told the Duke it was in violation of sacred scripture. Geilana became very angry at this, and in the absence of the duke, had Kilian along with two of his companions, Saint Kolonat) and Saint Totnan beheaded beheaded in the main square of Würzburg.
Today St Kilian's Cathedral stands on the spot where Kilian and his companions were martyred.
