This bridge was the first non-military bridge to cross over the Tennessee River. It was closed to traffic in 1978 and sat disused for over 10 years. After it was repaired and renovated it was opened as one of the longest pedestrian bridges in the world, being just short of one-half mile long. It was added to the National register of Historic Places in 1990.
