The present house is a two-story main house with a long two-story rear ell. The rear ell was probably added by James Phelps who bought the place in 1827.
This property was built for Sumner Bastow, a lawyer, in 1817.
Bastow reportedly found his profession distasteful and took up the
position of cashier in the Oxford bank. He sold to James Phelps
in 1827. Vol I of the town history notes that Phelps had the house
enlarged and that Jabez Ellis was the carpenter. Phelps also built
a "beautiful barn" in 1839. (Vol I, p.187). The Phelps family
owned the place until 1882. The place remained a farm until at
least the 1950s.
