A beautiful brick building built 1890. It is a 2 1/2 story building, the entrance being centered and flanked by twin Palladian windows on either side. Roof level has dormers on the either end.
The Conant Public Library is a brick Romanesque Revival building, one of the best architectural examples in the county. The public library was established in 1876, when the Washington Library Assoc. donated its collection to the Town for a municipal library.
During the winter of 1888-89 Exra Conant died and provided a generous bequest to his native town. Conant, born in Winchester in 1812 was a good living in the patent leather business. He established a trust fund that eventually was given to the town.
Originally there was to be a combined Library and Town Hall, however with the bequeath a separate library was to be built. J.M.Currier of Springfield, MA was hired to draw plans for the new library. Work on the library began in 1890 and was completed on Dec 15, 1891. While some modifications have been made to the building since its construction, it looks pretty much like it did on that day.
