The gardens were originally established in the early part of the 17th century by King Christian IV as private gardens for his Rosenburg Castle. But as early as 1710 after the new Frederiksberg Castle was built, the gardens became Copenhagen's earliest public park.
The sculpture is the oldest one in the park and was commissioned by King Christian IV from Peter Husum and Jorgen Wulff. It is a copy of a marble Roman statue on the Capitoline Hill in Rome.
It depicts a lion with a human face devouring a horse that it has brought down, ready for the kill. The horse is lying on its side with the lion biting into the horse's flank. The horse is desperately trying to reach round with its head and bite the lion's neck.
