A bronze historical marker is set at ground level. The marker is embedded into a granite block and flanked by two granite posts. The marker is inscribed:

Southeast of the marker is his house, later to become the Maynard Tavern. The house was built as Colonel Benjamin Tyler's homestead. Benjamin Tyler was active in community affairs. In 1767, he was elected a Claremont selectman at the first town meeting. He was also mechanic, inventor, mill owner, and local builder.

Austin Tyler, the son of Benjamin, later converted the house into a popular tavern which he jointly owned with Daniel F. Maynard and Horace G. P. Cross. Later the building was enlarged by the addition of two wings which are now apartment houses.
