Albany's Soldiers and Sailors Monument is a 22' by 6' rectangle that is 21' high and is placed on a 65' by 35' granite base. The monument is encircled with marble reliefs of sixty soldiers and sailors marching off to war. On the front of the monument is a 9' high bronze sculpture of an allegorical female figure, symbolizing the nation, dressed in long robes. She is standing upright while carrying palm branches, a symbol of peace, and a sheathed sword, a symbol of war. Below the figure is the bronze seal of the City of Albany.

The monument was sculpted by Hermon A. MacNeil. He titled the sculpture "The Nation in Peace Won Through Victorious War". The Albany Granite Company was the contractor. The work was commissioned in 1909 and dedicated on October 12, 1912. The monument cost $100,000 and was restored in 1986.

Across the lower back of the monument is the inscription:

IN COMMEMORATION
OF THE MEN OF ALBANY WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES TO SAVE THE UNION
AND IN GRATEFUL RECOGNITION OF ALL WHOSE PATRIOTISM
AIDED IN GIVING TO THIS NATION UNDER GOD A NEW BIRTH OF FREEDOM
IN MAKING LOVE OF COUNTRY A NATIONAL VIRTUE
AND IN ENDOWING OUR LAND WITH THE BLESSINGS OF
PEACE AND PROSPERITY
