California's Youngest Rocks
Scattered on the ground in front of you are California's youngest rocks-black dacite. With the volatile reawakening of Lassen Peak in 1914, repeated steam explosions tore and tossed existing rocks from the 27,000-year-old crater. But no new rock ever formed in the crater until the evening of May 14, 1915. A growing dome of dacite lava welled up and filled the crater. And then five days later, a violent steam blast shattered the dome and showered new rock here and about the summit.

You are .2 miles from the top.

Licking Red Flame
June 14, 1914
Just as I turned to leave the crater's rim, there was a puff of blue smoke, followed by a tongue of red flame...I started to pick my way down the mountain, but in a trice I was enveloped in a could of smoke, while a perfect hail of small volcanic bombs and cinders beat down upon me. Then I was struck by a stone about twice the size of my fist and felled me to the ground.
