EN: The main post office of Basel is located in a historic sandstone building in the old town. The house was built 1376-78 as a department store, and was rebuilt and expanded in the second half of the 16th century. In 1853 it was converted into a post office building and expanded in 1881. The main face refers to the nearby Gothic town Hall with its battlements and oriel windows. Inside the building there are some murals of Achilles Schlöth, Burkhard Mangold and Coghuf.
DE: Die Hauptpost von Basel befindet sich in einem historischen Sandsteingebäude in der Altstadt. Das Haus entstand 1376-78 als Kaufhaus, und wurde in der zweiten Hälfte des 16. Jahrhunderts umgebaut und erweitert. 1853 wurde es zum Postgebäude umgebaut, und 1881 erweitert. Die Haupfassade spielt mit ihren Zinnen und Erkern auf das nahe gelegene gotische Rathaus an. Im Innern des Gebäudes befinden sich einige Wandbilder von Achilles Schlöth, Burkhard Mangold und Coghuf.
