This special wagon was used to spread manure on the surface of a field to act as a fertilizer. The bars on the bed of the wagon would be drawn by the chains on their ends toward the rear of the wagon, causing the load of manure to be constantly shifted to the spreading apparatus. The spikes on rotating shafts would twirl while digging into the shifting load of manure, flinging it into the spinning augur at the very rear, which spread it from side to side. All of the moving parts were powered by gears attached to the axles of the wagon.
