Born and raised in Spencer, Indiana Ernest went on to become a great sculptor and shrewd business man. He created numerous statues including his famous "The Spirit of the American Doughboy", "The Unveiling", the "Imp-O-Luck", "The Spirit of the American Navy", "The Spirit of the Fighting Yank", "Lincoln as a Boy" and "Comrades" among many others. One of his Doughboy statues can be found on the west side of the Owen County Courthouse and other pieces of his work can be found on display inside the courthouse. The Owen County Heritage & Culture Center Museum, located at 110 East Market Street, also has some of his work on display. Sadly, after the death of his second wife, this brilliant man became despondent to the point that he felt he could no longer go on living. On October 4, 1946 Owen County, and the world, lost an icon when Ernest took his own life.
Description:
As a young boy Ernest learned the trade of sculpting, engraving and carving from his father. When he was older, he used this knowledge to create wonderful statues that helped him become well-known all across America. His most famous creation is "The Spirit of the American Doughboy" which can be found standing by courthouses in at least 39 of the 50 states.
