This large basalt outcrop on the east wall of Newberry Crater is locally known as Cougar Point. It is a short distance above the road into Cinder Hill Campground, but requires a steep climb of about 280 feet vertically. There are a couple of user trails leading up from the campground. Newberry Crater is actually a caldera, which formed about 75,000 years ago. The caldera covers 17 square mile and is located at the summit of Newberry Volcano which covers 1200 square miles with flows extending about 75 miles north-south and 40 miles east-west.
