In the industrial revolution Bradford expanded rapidly as an industrial town that specialised in textile manufacturing. It was so successful that it became known as the wool capital of the world.
However the textile sector in Bradford fell into decline from the mid-20th century. Many factories closed and their chimneys demolished.
This tall slender chimney is one of the few survivors. Ironically it has survived because it stands in a conservation area because many of the buildings nearby are English Heritage Grade II listed buildings. Without this conservation area protection this chimney may also have been demolished.
The chimney stands behind a brick wall but is very close to it and the wall is accessible in a public car park.
