S 13/14, Redmond, Washington - Nike Missile Sites on Waymarking.com

During the Cold War Washington state received substantial defenses against enemy bombing attacks. These included the supersonic Nike missile system emplaced around Seattle, Spokane / Fairchild Air Force Base, and the Hanford nuclear facility. The first generation Nike Ajax became operational in 1956. With the introduction of the advanced Nike Hercules missiles with nuclear warheads and longer-range, Nike Ajax missile installations closed. The Nike Hercules was designed to operate from existing Ajax launch facilities. A reevaluation of the threat in the 1970s led to closing the Nike installations. After sitting empty for a number of years, a good portion of the former Washington missiles base has been converted into Nike Park.

The coordinates take you to the launch site where the magazines that housed the Nike missiles were stored. These are flooded and we were told that scuba divers use them on occasion.

This complex covered a large area, with varying degrees of development since it was decommissioned in 1974. A portion of the area was converted into Nike Park with amenities including a children's play area, a basketball half court, a pickleball court, trails in forest areas, picnic tables, and open space.
