Near Hanna City, within the Wildlife Prairie Park, is a new butterfly house.
Wildlife Prairie is located west of the city of Peoria. From I-74, take Exit 82 to Kickapoo/Edwards Street. Go south on this road to the park entrance on the left. After going through the admissions gate ($8 for adults), drive to the end where the zoo portion is located. Follow the map and paths to the butterfly house.
The structure is sort of greenhouse shaped. One entrance is at the small end of the building and the other through the side. They both have double-doors and a transition space. The walls-ceiling are made of a dark mesh type material over a frame. Near one end is a sign that states the following:
"In loving memory of a beautiful life
Kim St. John
Butterfly Habitat
Dedicated May 12, 2013
with special gratitude
to the special gardeners"
Inside, there is a white pea-gravel walkway with bushes placed along the way. Also, there are signs to describe the habitat there and what butterflies are attracted to it.
Unfortunately, there were not butterflies there. Final preparations were still being made before the opening. According to a media web site, this took place on Sept. 22, 2013 (the visit was on Sept. 5).
I'm not sure when the butterfly house is closed for the winter. The web site for the park was not specific.
