Marylhurst Convent Cemetery is a private cemetery. One reference dates the altar and cemetery to 1911/1937. Mr. Prosser of Oswego donated the land for this cemetery. Both priests and nuns are interred here. Some of the Sisters that are buried here were from St. Paul and some were from the Holy Names of Mary and Joseph convent which was located here in Marylhurst.
Marylhurst University where both the cemetery and previously, the convent, were located is a private Catholic liberal arts university located in Marylhurst, Oregon south of Portland on the Willamette River. It is among the oldest collegiate degree-granting institutions in Oregon, awarding its first degree in 1897. Marylhurst was founded and run for many years by the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary, a Roman Catholic teaching Roman Catholic religious institute.
Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary is a Catholic order whose mission involves teaching. Their motto is: "Jésus et Marie, Ma Force et Ma Gloire" ("Jesus and Mary, my strength and my glory"). Catholic doctrine teaches that the Catholic Church was founded by Jesus Christ. It makes sense that in a cemetery welcoming nuns and priests of the Catholic faith who lived here at Marylhust would contain a spot for reflection on the welcoming Christ who the residents expected to meet after death.
