Near East Peoria, within the Farmdale Recreation Area, is the Fondulac Creek Dam.
The dam is located along Bittersweet Lane. From Route 8 in Washington, go south on Summit Street, which turns into Bittersweet Lane. Follow the road until you see the dam on the right and the parking lot on the left. Further down the road is the Farmdale Creek Dam on the left side at a sharp right turn.
The Fondulac Creek dam is a dry water dam with a concrete spillway. The fact sheet produced by the US Army Corps of Engineering has the following specs:
Fondulac Dam
Type – Rolled Earth
Length at Crest 1000’
Width at Crest 20’
Maximum Height 67’
Storage 3780 acre feet
The creek is culverted through the earthen dam on the west side. The creek runs south under the road and then resurfaces.
At the time of visit (Sept. 2013), the creek was barely flowing. There was a little standing water behind the dam. At that time, the area was experiencing a drought. It's amazing to think that they need such structures in wetter times.
The Farmdale Recreation Area, maintained by the US Army Corps of Engineers, is an area where people can walk, bike or ride a horse through several miles of wooded and field land. Admission is free. However, do check water conditions, first.
