Breuckelen is the original name of a former settlement in what was called Nieuw-Nederland, founded in 1646 by Willem Kieft and named after Breukelen in The Netherlands. Kieft allowed limited self government of two counselors, in 1654 expanded by Peter Stuyvesant to four counselors. The town became the main center in the five villages together forming Brooklyn providing counselors and policing for these villages. The name was later Americanized into Brooklyn. The original Breuckelen was located at the current Brooklyn Heights location.
