In 1978, the Norman Historic District was established which included 45 buildings on E. Main Street and one on W. Main. In 2012, a re-evaluation of this District was made. The District boundaries were expanded to include East and West Gray and Comanche; North and South Crawford, Peters and Porter; North Santa Fe; and South Jones and Webster. Fourteen of the original District buildings were considered to no longer qualify. Four properties within the new boundaries had in the meantime been placed on the National Register in their own right. As a result, the Downtown Norman Historic District was formed, which includes 62 contributing properties (30 from the original Norman Historic District,) and 48 non-contributing buildings.

The coordinates shown are for the building at 219 E. Main, one of the oldest buildings in the District.

Norman was first settled with the Land Run of 1889. Buildings date from 1891 to 1960, and represent the varying architectural styles of the different periods. A fire in 1902 destroyed most of the older buildings on the south side of the 100 block of E. Main. Another fire in the 1920s destroyed half of the buildings on the south side of the 200 block.

Norman has a rich history dating back to Indian Territory days, and great attention has been paid to preserving and restoring these beautiful buildings from the past.
